About the Abyssinian
Ancient. Enigmatic. Athletic. The Abyssinian, or Aby for short, is one of the world's most popular breeds, as well as one of the oldest, with origins that are shrouded in mystery.
Abyssinians are unquestionably among the most intelligent creatures ever created. A cat who enjoys being around humans, who wants to know what you're up to and who wants to assist. The Aby is possibly the most faithful breed in the planet. They have a high IQ and what appears to be a motor that runs almost constantly, making them great explorers.

Care and grooming
Outside of their usual shedding seasons, Abyssinians aren't known for being heavy shedders, so daily grooming should be simple. Brushing them once a week is probably all they'll need. They do, however, enjoy rubbing their hands with a chamois, so a daily pat-down can be a fantastic opportunity to bond with your Aby while also maintaining her coat in good shape. A wash once a month is also beneficial and can be a relatively painless experience if they are introduced to it as kittens.
Periodontal disease can be avoided by brushing your teeth. Daily oral hygiene is ideal, but brushing once a week is preferable to nothing. Every couple of weeks, trim your nails. To clear any discharge, use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the corners of your eyes. To avoid the possibility of transmitting infection, use a different section of the towel for each eye. Check the ears at least once a week. Cotton swabs should not be used since they can harm the ear's inner.
Keep the litter box as clean as possible.
Common questions
How much does abyssinian cat insurance cost?
There is no single price — pet insurance premiums depend on your cat's age, your ZIP code, and the coverage you choose, and breed matters because it predicts claims. For the Abyssinian, the conditions to price against are real: vision problems treatment alone can run up to $4,000. Comparing quotes for your specific pet takes about a minute and is the only accurate answer.
What health problems do Abyssinians have?
The breed-associated conditions worth insuring against include Dental problems, Hearing problems, Vision problems. Costs for these range from routine management to four-figure treatment bills, which is why insuring a Abyssinian young — before anything becomes a pre-existing condition — matters more than for a mixed breed.
Is insurance worth it for an indoor Abyssinian?
Staying indoors prevents accidents, not genetics. The conditions above are hereditary or age-related and arrive regardless of lifestyle — an indoor Abyssinian is just as exposed to them as an outdoor cat, minus the traffic.
When should I insure my Abyssinian?
As young as practical. Anything diagnosed before the policy starts becomes a pre-existing condition and is excluded for life — and for a breed with known hereditary risks, early diagnosis of exactly those conditions is common.
