How long should I stop at a stop sign?

I’m new to the United States and I used the driver’s license from my home country to exchange a driver’s license in the US. There’s barely a stop sign in my home country so I’m not familiar with the rule. How long should I stop at a stop sign?

Although there is no time limit for stopping at a stop sign, you must come to a complete stop. It only takes a few moments to finish and it might also help you avoid getting a "failure to stop" ticket.

The information in this answer is general in nature and is not legal or insurance advice for your specific situation. Policy language varies carrier by carrier; your declarations page is the final word. If you're unsure, call your agent before you need to file.
