Root insurance is founded on the belief that people who drive well should pay less. It is a mobile-first insurance carrier that uses an app to rate drivers based primarily on how they drive. It has raised $177mm as of June 2019.

Hippo says, "Simpler, smarter home and condo insurance for up to 25% less and it has modernized home insurance." It provided a very straightforward quoting process, and the price is also very competitive.

Esurance

Esurance sells auto, home, motorcycle, and renters insurance direct to consumers online and by phone. Founded in 1999, Esurance is purchased by Allstate and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Allstate.

Pros.

  • Multiple product lines
  • Relative competitive pricing
  • Super high financial rating as an Allstate company

Cons.

  • The app experience is somewhat complicated
  • You should pay attention to fees
  • No local agents
