About the Bulldog

The Bulldog is a thick-set, low-slung, well-muscled bruiser who is kind but courageous, friendly but dignified. These placid, obedient companions are equally at home in the city as out in the country.

The demeanor of a bulldog is significantly more affable and humorous than he appears. Bulldogs are incredibly family and kid friendly, despite their formidable appearance. Bulldogs aren't usually aggressive. He's practically dopey, in fact. He may not always grasp what you're saying, but he's always friendly and sincere.

Renting with a Bulldog

Most of our readers rent — and the pet policy decides more than the insurance does. From the apartment communities we track nationwide:

81%

of apartment communities with a stated pet policy allow dogs

~65%

of apartments that publish a dog weight limit would accept a 50 lb adult (median cap: 50 lb)

$30/mo

median pet rent — about $360/year before any vet bill

$300

median one-time pet fee (a similar refundable deposit is common too)

Source: SafeButler apartment community dataset, 23,533 communities with published pet terms, July 2026. Full numbers in our apartment pet fees report.

Two costs stack for apartment dog owners: the building's pet charges, and the vet bills the building's fees do nothing about. Pet insurance addresses the second — and for renters, the liability side of a dog (bites, damage) runs through your renters policy, not your pet policy.

Care and grooming

Because a bulldog's coat is fine and short, it only has to be brushed once a week. You'll notice less hair on your furnishings and clothing if you brush frequently. Brushing is less crucial than keeping his face clean and dry—with so many wrinkles, they might become irritating or infected if not properly cared for. Once a month or so, trim his nails until you can't hear him click-clacking on the floor. Brushing your teeth on a weekly or daily basis will help you avoid unnecessary vet appointments in the future.

While the bulldog dislikes exercise, it is necessary for him to maintain a healthy weight because he is prone to weight gain. A daily walk around the neighborhood during the cooler hours, as well as a quick play session, will exhaust him. He'd rather be cuddling with his child pals or napping in the air conditioning.

Bulldogs benefit from two measured meals every day rather than leaving the bowl out all day. They'd keep eating if no one stopped them.

Common questions

How much does bulldog insurance cost?

There is no single price — pet insurance premiums depend on your dog's age, your ZIP code, and the coverage you choose, and breed matters because it predicts claims. For the Bulldog, the conditions to price against are real: gastric dilatation volvulus(bloat) treatment alone can run up to $7,500. Comparing quotes for your specific pet takes about a minute and is the only accurate answer.

What health problems do Bulldogs have?

The breed-associated conditions worth insuring against include Fold Dermatitis, Colitis, Deafness, Elbow Dysplasia, Entropion. Costs for these range from routine management to four-figure treatment bills, which is why insuring a Bulldog young — before anything becomes a pre-existing condition — matters more than for a mixed breed.

Can I have a Bulldog in an apartment?

Usually, but check the pet policy before you fall in love with a floor plan. In our apartment dataset, 81% of communities with a stated policy allow dogs, and among those that publish a weight limit, roughly 65% would accept a 50 lb adult Bulldog (the median cap is 50 lb). Expect pet rent and a one-time fee on top of your own rent — and note some buildings apply breed restrictions regardless of size.

Does insurance cover my Bulldog biting someone?

Not pet insurance — that covers your dog's own medical care. Liability for a bite falls to the liability portion of your renters or homeowners policy, and some carriers apply breed exclusions there, so it's worth checking both policies. Our guide to renters insurance and dog bites covers the details.
